Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk

In the beautiful vicinity of Alblasserwaard, you will find the windmills of Kinderdijk.

Nineteen magnificent windmills, built around 1740, stand here as part of a larger water management system to prevent flooding. Today they are an symbol of the Dutch water management. And in 1997 the windmills of Kinderdijk were declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you visit Kinderdijk, you should definitely take a look inside the three available Museum Mills and watch the multiscreen film in 'Hulpgemaal De Fabriek'. Discover the area from the water by sailing along the mills with one of the boats. In the Molenwerkplaats, you find an explanation about the operation and maintenance of the mills. The Kinderdijk windmills are not far from Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.
